Loughgall Ambush
On May 8, 1987, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) launched an attack on a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) base in Loughgall, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The IRA unit used a digger carrying a bomb and a van to breach the perimeter fence. However, they were ambushed by the British Army's Special Air Service (SAS), who had been forewarned. Eight IRA members were killed in the ensuing gunfight, making it the greatest loss of life for the IRA in a single incident during The Troubles. The bomb detonated, injuring three RUC members and causing substantial damage.
