Night of the Big Wind
On January 6, 1839, Ireland was struck by the 'Night of the Big Wind' (Oíche na Gaoithe Móire), a powerful European windstorm. This devastating storm caused widespread destruction across the country, resulting in significant property damage and an estimated 250-300 deaths. Many homes were destroyed, particularly in Connacht, Ulster, and northern Leinster, and 42 ships were wrecked. The event became a significant part of Irish folklore and was later used as a reference point for age verification in pension claims due to its memorable impact.
