Battle of Maipú: Bernardo O'Higgins' Victory
On April 5, 1818, the Battle of Maipú took place near Santiago, Chile, a decisive engagement in the South American wars of independence. The Patriot forces, led by General José de San Martín and including Chilean leader Bernardo O'Higgins, secured a crucial victory against Spanish royalists. Bernardo O'Higgins, the illegitimate son of an Irish-born viceroy, Ambrosio O'Higgins, played a significant role in Chile's independence movement and is considered one of the country's founding fathers. This victory solidified Chilean independence.
