Birth of Bernardo O'Higgins

On August 17, 1778, Bernardo O'Higgins, a pivotal figure in South American independence, was born in Chile. His father was Ambrose O'Higgins, a native of County Sligo, Ireland, who rose to become a brigadier general in the Chilean army and later Viceroy of Peru. Bernardo received his education in England, where he encountered ideas of Latin American independence. Upon his return to Chile in 1802, he became actively involved in the movement. He led a successful revolt against Spanish rule in Chile three years later, alongside José de San Martín, and subsequently led a rebel force against the Spanish in Peru, earning him the title 'Father of Chilean Independence.'
