Thomas Blood's Attempted Theft of the Crown Jewels
On May 9, 1671, Irish-born adventurer Thomas Blood attempted to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Disguised as a clergyman, Blood and his accomplices gained access to the jewels. They managed to seize the Imperial State Crown, Sceptre, and Orb, but were apprehended before they could escape the Tower. Despite the audacious crime, Blood was pardoned by King Charles II, a decision that remains a subject of historical debate. Blood was born in County Clare, Ireland, and had a history of rebellious activities against the English Crown.
