William Ó Ceallaigh's Christmas Feast

In 1351, William Ó Ceallaigh (O'Kelly), chieftain of the powerful Uí Mhaine kingdom in what is now east Galway and Roscommon, hosted a grand Christmas feast for the poets, musicians, and learned men of Ireland. This event, known as a 'gairm sgoile' or bardic assembly, was a significant cultural gathering. A temporary village was constructed with dedicated areas for different artistic groups, showcasing the wealth and cultural patronage of the Ó Ceallaigh dynasty. The feast is remembered as a remarkable example of Gaelic hospitality and the importance of the arts in medieval Irish society, reinforcing the social and political standing of the host chieftain.
