On February 3, 1537, 'Silken' Thomas FitzGerald, former Lord Deputy of Ireland, was executed in the Tower of London along with five of his uncles. FitzGerald had led a rebellion against Henry VIII in 1534, known as the 'Silken Thomas Affair'. After a period of hiding, he surrendered in 1535 under promises of mercy. However, Henry VIII sought retribution, leading to FitzGerald's execution. This event was a significant moment in the Tudor conquest of Ireland, symbolizing the English Crown's tightening grip and contributing to the decline of Gaelic Ireland.
