On January 8, 1979, the oil tanker Betelgeuse exploded at the Gulf Oil terminal in Bantry Bay, Whiddy Island, Ireland. The catastrophic event, which occurred around 1:00 AM, resulted in the deaths of 50 people, including 42 French nationals, seven Irish nationals, and one British national. The explosion and subsequent fire were attributed to structural failure of the ship during cargo discharge. The disaster led to significant environmental damage and a lengthy salvage operation.
