On August 7, 1573, Walter Devereux, the 1st Earl of Essex, departed Liverpool for Ireland with a force of approximately 1,200 men. His objective was an unsuccessful attempt to colonize a part of north-east Ulster. This expedition is infamously associated with the massacre of the entire population of Rathlin Island, a brutal act that occurred during his campaign. The event is a stark example of the violent and often ruthless methods employed during the English attempts to assert control over Ireland in the 16th century, leading to significant loss of life and deep-seated resentment.
