On October 10, 1918, the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company's RMS Leinster was torpedoed by a German U-boat one hour out of Kingstown/Dún Laoghaire. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 501 of the 771 people on board, many of whom were soldiers. This tragic event occurred just over a month before the end of World War I and remains one of the greatest maritime disasters in Irish history. The loss of life had a profound impact on communities across Ireland and beyond.
