On August 7, 1972, Lance-Corporal Henry Creighton, a librarian and member of the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR), was shot and killed by the IRA near his home on the Fermanagh/Monaghan border. His death brought the total number of fatalities in Northern Ireland since 1969 to 500.
