In the early hours of April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg. The luxury liner, built in Belfast, Ireland, carried over 2,200 passengers and crew, with a significant number of Irish emigrants among them. The disaster resulted in the loss of more than 1,500 lives, making it one of the deadliest maritime peacetime disasters in history. The sinking had a profound impact globally and within Ireland, particularly in Belfast, where the ship was constructed, and in communities that lost many of their own.
