On Christmas Day 1591, Red Hugh O'Donnell, the 19-year-old heir to the O'Donnell dynasty, escaped from Dublin Castle. He had been held hostage there for four years by the English Crown to ensure the loyalty of his powerful family in Ulster. O'Donnell and his companions, Art and Henry O'Neill, made their escape in harsh winter conditions. While Henry was separated and recaptured, Red Hugh and Art managed to reach the Wicklow Mountains, where Art tragically died from exposure. O'Donnell, suffering from severe frostbite, was eventually rescued by his allies and returned to Ulster. His escape was a significant event, galvanizing northern resistance to English rule and contributing to the outbreak of the Nine Years' War.
