Miles Byrne, a prominent United Irishman and officer in Napoleon's Irish Legion, died in Paris on January 24, 1862. Byrne was a key figure in the 1798 Rising in Wexford, participating in its major battles, including the climactic defeat at Vinegar Hill. After the rising's failure, he served with Michael Dwyer and later joined the Irish Legion in the French army, rising to command a regiment and earning the Legion of Honor.
