On September 29, 1984, the Irish Naval Service intercepted the trawler Marita Anne off the coast of Fenit, County Kerry. The vessel was found to be carrying a substantial consignment of seven tons of arms and ammunition, believed to be destined for the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) from the United States. The interception was a significant success for Irish security forces in their efforts to disrupt illegal arms shipments during the Troubles. The discovery led to arrests and highlighted the ongoing challenges of preventing paramilitary groups from acquiring weaponry.
