Magna Charta Hiberniae Issued

November 12, 1216

On November 12, 1216, approximately seventeen months after King John of England conceded Magna Carta to his rebellious barons, a slightly amended version, known as Magna Charta Hiberniae, was issued for Ireland. This charter extended some of the rights and liberties granted in the English Magna Carta to the Anglo-Norman lords and settlers in Ireland, marking an important step in the development of legal and political structures in medieval Ireland and influencing its constitutional history.
