Founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA)

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was founded on November 1, 1884, in Hayes' Hotel, Thurles, County Tipperary. A group of Irishmen, including Michael Cusack and Maurice Davin, established the organization to foster and preserve Ireland's unique Gaelic games and athletic pastimes, and to promote Irish culture and language.
