On May 3, 1916, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, and Thomas Clarke were executed by firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol. These were the first executions of leaders involved in the Easter Rising, a pivotal moment in Irish history. Their deaths, and the subsequent executions, galvanized Irish public opinion and fueled the nationalist movement.
