On May 9, 1916, Thomas Kent, an Irish nationalist and participant in the Easter Rising, was executed by firing squad in Cork. Kent was one of only two leaders of the Rising not executed in Dublin, and the only one executed outside of the capital. He was court-martialled and sentenced to death following a gunfight with the Royal Irish Constabulary at his family home in Bawnard House, County Cork, after the Rising. His execution underscored the British government's severe response to the rebellion.
