On May 8, 1916, Eamonn Ceannt, Michael Mallin, Seán Heuston, and Conn Colbert were executed at Kilmainham Gaol. These men were prominent figures in the Easter Rising, an armed insurrection against British rule in Ireland that had taken place in April 1916. Their executions, following the surrender of the rebels, were part of a series of reprisals by the British authorities. These actions, intended to suppress the rebellion, instead galvanized Irish public opinion and significantly fueled the movement for Irish independence, making them martyrs in the cause.
