In 1889, Clare won the first Munster final before facing Dublin in the All-Ireland final. Despite Clare leading at halftime in atrocious conditions, Dublin secured their first All-Ireland title with a 5–1 to 1–6 scoreline. W.J. Spain, who scored three goals for Dublin, became the first dual All-Ireland winner, having also won an All-Ireland football medal in 1887.
