The Civil Rights march in Derry on 5 October 1968 was organized to highlight grievances regarding housing, employment, and electoral practices. Supported by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), the march was banned by the Stormont government. When it proceeded, the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) blocked the route and baton-charged the crowd. Television cameras recorded the scenes, and the subsequent news coverage led to rioting in Derry. Many commentators consider this event the beginning of 'The Troubles'.
