Cathal Brugha, a prominent Irish republican and politician, was mortally wounded on July 5, 1922, during the final days of fighting between the National Army and the anti-Treaty IRA in O'Connell Street, Dublin. He emerged from the Hammam Hotel, guns blazing, in a defiant last stand. Brugha was a key figure in the Irish War of Independence and a vocal opponent of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. His death was a tragic loss for the anti-Treaty side and a poignant moment in the early stages of the Irish Civil War.
