On July 21, 1920, sectarian violence erupted in Belfast as "Protestant and unionist" workers at Workman and Clark's shipyard, incited by political rhetoric, forcibly expelled Catholic and socialist colleagues from their workplaces. This action quickly escalated into widespread riots across the city, lasting for several days. The unrest resulted in the deaths of thirteen people—seven Catholics and six Protestants—and caused significant displacement and injury.
