On October 12, 1798, a French invasion squadron, led by Admiral Jean-Baptiste-François Bompart, was decisively defeated by a British squadron under Sir John Borlase Warren off the coast of County Donegal, near Tory Island. This naval engagement marked the final major action of the 1798 Irish Rebellion. The French fleet was attempting to land reinforcements and supplies for the United Irishmen, but their defeat effectively ended any hopes of significant French military aid for the rebellion. The battle ensured British naval supremacy in the region and crushed the last vestiges of organized resistance from the United Irishmen.
