On May 27, 1798, during the Irish Rebellion, the Battle of Oulart Hill took place in County Wexford. A large force of United Irish rebels, estimated at around 1,000, decisively defeated a detachment of approximately 110 militia from the North Cork Rifles. The militia, sent to suppress the growing rebellion, were almost entirely annihilated. This victory significantly boosted rebel morale and led to the rapid spread of the rebellion throughout Wexford, culminating in the capture of Enniscorthy and Wexford town. The battle is considered a pivotal moment in the 1798 Rebellion, showcasing the initial strength and determination of the Irish insurgents.
