On October 14, 1318, the Battle of Faughart took place near Dundalk, County Louth, marking a pivotal moment in Irish history. Edward Bruce, brother of Robert the Bruce and self-proclaimed High King of Ireland, was decisively defeated and killed by an Anglo-Norman force led by John de Birmingham and the Archbishop of Armagh. This battle effectively ended the Bruce campaign in Ireland, which had aimed to establish a Scottish-Irish alliance against English rule. Bruce's death led to the collapse of his forces and the end of Scottish attempts to conquer Ireland, restoring Anglo-Norman dominance.
