On April 23, 1014, the Battle of Clontarf took place near Dublin, where the forces of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, decisively defeated a coalition of Vikings and Irish rebels. This victory significantly weakened Norse power in Ireland. However, Brian Boru himself was tragically killed by a group of retreating Norsemen after the battle. His death, despite the victory, led to a period of political instability and fragmentation in Ireland, as the unified high kingship he had established began to unravel.
