The Battle of Aughrim, fought on July 12, 1691 (Old Style), was the decisive engagement of the Williamite War in Ireland. It pitted the largely Irish Jacobite army, loyal to James II, against the forces of William III near Aughrim, County Galway. This brutal conflict resulted in approximately 7,000 casualties, making it one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on Irish soil. The Williamite victory at Aughrim effectively ended James II's campaign to regain the British throne and solidified Protestant dominance in Ireland, though the city of Limerick continued to resist for a few more months.
