United Irishman Bartholomew Teeling, an aide-de-camp to General Jean Joseph Humbert during the 1798 Rebellion, was executed in Dublin on September 24, 1798. Teeling, son of a wealthy linen merchant, had joined the United Irish movement and fought bravely alongside French forces in County Mayo. He was captured after the Battle of Ballinamuck and subsequently hanged at Arbour Hill barracks. His execution made him a martyr for the cause of Irish independence.
