On March 5, 1921, during the Irish War of Independence, the Irish Volunteers successfully ambushed a British convoy at Clonbanin, County Cork. Led by Seán Moylan, the North Cork Flying Column targeted what they believed to be a convoy carrying a high-ranking British officer. The ambush resulted in the death of British General Hanway Cumming and twelve other British soldiers. This engagement was a significant victory for the Irish Volunteers, demonstrating their effectiveness in guerrilla warfare and inflicting a notable casualty on the British command, further intensifying the conflict.
